And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth, and we have beheld his glory
The Holy Innocents teach us that even innocent people will suffer persecution, but God will reward them
Mary and Joseph offer Jesus to his heavenly Father, prefiguring his offering of himself on the cross for our salvation
We will be persecuted by the world for preaching the gospel
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord
John the Baptist's father praises God's salvation now present in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Mary goes with haste to the hill country to share with Elizabeth the good news that she will be the mother of the Messiah
Salvation only comes through Jesus Christ who reconciles us with God by suffering our death penalty for our sins for us
John the Baptist will be a warrior for the Lord, a wilderness dweller, making ready for the Lord a people prepared
She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins
Since the Messiah will inherit the throne of David, St. Matthew begins his gospel with genealogical proof that Jesus is the son of David and therefore the heir to his throne
John the Baptist's authority is from God, and he proclaimed Jesus as the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world
John the Baptist identifies himself as the voice crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, as Isaiah prophesied
Jesus the Messiah will reign over a universal and everlasting kingdom of peace on earth upon the throne of David forever
Nonbelievers will always find fault with true preachers of the gospel
John the Baptist is the greatest of the Old Testament prophets, but the least in the kingdom is greater than he
Sin is the root of all our problems, and Jesus came to save us from our sins and thereby from our other problems too
John the Baptist calls people to genuinely repent of their sins so that the death of the Son of God might atone for them
Jesus proclaims the arrival of the kingdom of God and confirms the divine origin of his preaching by miracles
Christ cures us of the blindness of sin, through our faith in him, because of his atoning death on the cross
